The 7 Steps-
Step 4. Daring to Dream

Step 5

Optimism helps people feel better physically and emotionally. It makes them want to get up in the morning. Why is it so hard for many Third Agers to maintain their optimism?

One of two reasons:

  1. They are afraid to dream, or their dreams aren't realistic. If they only have dreams without realistic plans, they seldom come true. If their dreams are realistic, they won't be disappointed.
  2. On the other hand, we don't want their imagination limited by too small a vision. We want them to believe their lives are filled with possibilities and yet, not get disappointed.

People in the Declining Energy model make the mistake of reaching too low. Or not reaching at all. We have specific exercises to help people define and reach realistic goals, whether the goals involve personal relationships, career changes, health concerns, etc. The resistance to this step is Lifeboat Mentality, a feeling that it is safer to remain in one place and do nothing about one's life instead of taking a chance on following a dream.
