As a member of The Third Age Foundation, you have access to critical information and advice concerning your career and the changes you want to make. The onset of a Third Age crisis is often brought on by a drastic change in a career
It is crucial in the Third Age to be involved in a career which gives you meaning and fulfillment. Too often this is not the case. Whether you get a younger boss or your passion is gone or your career is simply no longer an adventure - you can fall into a state of loss of motivation, boredom or anxiety that steals the energy you need for an uplifting and exciting Third Age. The foundation's career coaching offers individual coaching to help individuals through this difficult stage. A variety of testing will help elicit your interests and strengths. Also, in the Third Age groups which meet once a week, fellow group members who are your peers are extremely helpful with their support and advice.
Third Agers have unfinished business about their career during their Third Age. During their work life people change jobs and their career multiple times. This trend has been accelerating, causing more frequent changes and an alteration in the relationship between employer and employee. Employees no longer expect to be "taken care of" by their organizations. Entry into the Third Age, accompanied as it is with an underlying need for more meaning, causes many people to wish for job or career change. However, the motivation for work can shift radically.
Third Agers have a harder time tolerating jobs that feel meaningless or lack the opportunity to express their underlying values. Our career coaching is offered individually through coaching or in groups. We draw heavily on the work of Richard Bowles and Frederick Hudson. Full members are eligible for discounts in these services. We help participants clarify their values; determine their stage of transition along with specific activities that help in that stage; discover what they are good at and what they like to do; explore previously hidden options for altering their current job or discovering jobs or careers they never knew existed; and then help with search strategies to make the option become a reality. Some Third Agers no longer require full time or paid work but still want to feel involved in an organization and make a meaningful contribution. Our career programs also address these needs.
