Unfinished Business-
Career: Career Enrichment Coaching

Aging

The onset of a Third Age crisis is often brought on by a drastic change in a career. Whether we get a younger boss or our passion is gone or our career is simply no longer an adventure - we can fall into a state of anxiety that steals the energy we need for an uplifting and exciting Third Age. The foundation offers individual coaching to help individuals through this difficult stage. Also, in the Unfinished Business groups which meet once a week, fellow group members who are our peers can be extremely helpful with their support and advice.

A majority of Third Agers have unfinished business about their career during their Third Age. During their work life people change jobs and their career multiple times. This trend has been accelerating causing more frequent change and an alteration in the relationship between the employer and the employee. No longer do employees expect to be "taken care of" by their organizations. Entry into the Third Age, accompanied as it is with an underlying need for more meaning, causes may people to wish for job or career change. However, the motivation for work can shift radically

Third Agers have a harder time tolerating jobs that feel meaningless or lack the opportunity to express their underlying values. Our career counseling is offered individually through coaching or in groups. We draw heavily of the work of Richard Bowles and Frederick Hudson. We help participants clarify their values; determine their stage of transition along with specific activities that help in that stage; discover what they are good at and what they like to do; explore previously hidden options for altering their current job or discovering jobs or career they never knew existed; and then help with search strategies to make the option become a reality. Some Third Agers no longer require full time or paid work but still want to feel involved in an organization and make a meaningful contribution. Our career programs also address these needs.
