Our society defines aging in a negative way. We have been taught to value youth, physical prowess, and attractiveness. These characteristics diminish as we age, so we are facing a losing game if we maintain this perspective. It is vital to our well-being not to fall into society’s disparaging view of aging.
A recent study conducted by Dr. Suzanne Kunkel, director of the Scripps Gerontology Center at Ohio ’s Miami University , shows the importance of a positive attitude about aging. To quote Dr. Kunkel, “People’s perception of aging predicted the length of their survival.” In her prospective study “ the median survival of those in the positive self-perceptions of aging group was seven and a half years longer than those in the more negative perceptions.” Dr. Kunkel then makes an analogy between aging and being caught in a traffic jam. When I first considered entering the Third Age, I wanted two things that were hard to find: a good book about what to expect and how to hand it, and a workshop that would help me adapt. I was just a little early with regard to the books. With the coming of the baby boomer generation there will be 70 million people “retiring” over the next 10 years. While I have not found a book that addresses my original concerns directly, there are some useful ones.
I will put the books in order of priority, rate them, and then review in a short paragraph: what the book is about, what you can get from reading it, and finally what are its strengths and weaknesses... (continued in the newsletter)
